Matthew Marino
Chief of Police
Matthew Marino was hired by the city in 2008, is a third generation police officer, and the fifth member of his family to work for the City of New Britain’s Police Department. His late father, Thomas served for twenty-six years before retiring as a Sergeant in 2008. Matthew’s uncles Lou and Salvatore Marino, along with his uncle Frank Chiger all proudly served for several years, holding various ranks and assignments throughout their careers.
Matthew has held several assignments throughout his time with the department, having been a member of the Greater New Britain Shooting Task Force and SWAT Team. He has also served as a Sergeant, Lieutenant, and most recently as the Captain of the Professional Standard’s Division overseeing the New Britain Police Department’s Satellite Police Academy.
Matthew is a Dean’s List graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s 146th Administrative Officer’s Course and received his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. He attended Central Connecticut State University, where he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology in 2008 while simultaneously completing the New Britain Satellite Police Academy’s 8th Session.
Matthew attended New Britain Public Schools and graduated from New Britain High School as an all-state, all-conference scholar athlete in football and baseball.
On May 1, 2023 Chief Matthew T. Marino was sworn in by New Britain Mayor Erin E. Stewart as the 16th Chief of Police of the City of New Britain.
